RESUMEN
Estigma es un fenómeno socio-cultural de múltiples y
poderosas proyecciones en diversos campos, incluido el de
salud y salud mental. Históricamente, su arraigo colec-
tivo para calificar y marginar drásticamente a quienes
padecen de una enfermedad mental, se ha extendido a
todo tipo de escenarios clínicos. El artículo revisa las carac-
terísticas e implicancias de estigma en el contexto de un
hospital general y sobre la base de las tareas de la Psiquia-
tría de Enlace. Los actores de todo evento estigmatizante
(pacientes, familiares, profesionales, público, entre otros)
y las formas de presentación del estigma (negación, racio-
nalizaciones, rechazo abierto, silencio) se describen con
ejemplos pertinentes. Luego de analizar el impacto y las
consecuencias del estigma en el cuidado cotidiano y segui-
miento de los pacientes afectados, el artículo concluye
ofreciendo modalidades variadas de intervención y manejo;
y reflexiones en torno al significado de estigma y su futuro
en las interacciones medicina-sociedad a nivel global.

SUMMARY
Stigma is a socio-cultural phenomenon of multiple and
powerful projections in different areas, including those
of health and mental health. Historically, its collective
objective to qualify and drastically marginalize those who
suffer of a mental disorder, has expanded into all kinds
of clinical settings. The characteristics and implications of
stigma in the general hospital context, based on the tasks
of consultation-liaison psychiatry, are examined. Actors
of stigmatizing events (patients, relative, professionals,
public, etc.) and stigma’s forms of presentation (denial,
rationalizations, open rejection, silence, etc.) are also
described using pertinent examples. After analyzing the
impact and consequences of stigma on daily care and
follow-up of the affected patients, the article concludes
offering various intervention and management modalities
and reflections about the meaning of stigma and its future
in medicine-society interactions across de world.
