RESUMEN
El envejecimiento de la población es una realidad mundial,
siendo los adultos mayores (sobre 65 años) el grupo etario que
experimenta proporcionalmente el crecimientomás acelerado.
La frecuencia con que estos pacientes consultan en los Servicios
de Urgencia también se ve afectada siendo cada vez mayor. El
enfrentamiento de estos pacientes es siempre un desafío ya que
poseen características propias que dificultan el diagnóstico y
tratamiento. En esta población el dolor abdominal es el tercer
motivo de consultamás frecuente en los Servicios de Urgencias.
Suelen tener presentaciones atípicas con lo que el diagnóstico
es más engorroso y tardío, aumentando las complicaciones y
mortalidad. El espectro de urgencias abdominales es extenso,
por lo que es de utilidad ordenar los diagnósticos diferenciales
de acuerdo al mecanismo fisiopatológico subyacente en: infla-
matorias, obstructivas, vasculares y otras, favoreciendo así el
proceso diagnóstico y terapéutico.

SUMMARY
Population aging is a global reality, with older adults
(over 65) being the age group experiencing the most rapid
growth. The frequency with which these patients consult
in the Emergency Services is also affected with increasing
frequency. The confrontation of these patients is always
a challenge as they have their own characteristics that
make diagnosis and treatment difficult. In this population
abdominal pain is the third most frequent reason for
consultation in the Emergency Services. Usually have
atypical presentations with which the diagnosis is more
difficult and late, increasing complications and mortality.
The spectrum of abdominal urgencies is extensive, so it
is useful to order differential diagnoses according to the
pathophysiological mechanism underlying: inflammatory,
obstructive, vascular and other, thus favoring the diagnostic
and therapeutic process.
